A good and clear voice is considered one of the qualities of a superstar actor. To have an impressive personality, an actor should work on improving his voice projection.
I still remember that interview of Mr. Anil Kapoor in which he said that he was rejected because his voice was not so effective. He then worked on improving his voice projection and started getting recognition in the Bollywood industry. There are many such other examples like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Amrish Puri, and Kadar Khan who established an out of the box image due to their powerful voice.
An audible and effective voice projection forms with a blend of 3 keys viz., breathing, resonance, and pitch. There are a lot of exercises that you can try on to practice for better voice projection.
Try These Exercises At Home For Better Voice Projection.
I am going to suggest some of the very simple and quick exercises that you can do anywhere, at home or work or while traveling, to raise the power of your voice and deliver effective dialogue.
1: Breath Deeply
This is a simple breathing exercise that hardly takes 10 seconds of yours. Deep Breathing is very helpful in getting a deep voice. Try it out.
- Stand upright
- Keep your back straight.
- Keep your shoulders relaxed.
- Now put your both hands on your stomach.
- Take a deep breath in
- Expand your abdomen
- Hold-on to your breath.
- Count 1 to 10.
- Now, slowly breathe out.
- While exhaling out start contracting your stomach.
- That’s it!
Note: While doing this exercise, your shoulders should be in the same position. I mean your shoulder should not move up or down while you are doing this breath-in and out exercise. It is recommended to do this exercise at least 2 to 3 times a day.
2: Moving The Tongue Around
I think this one is the funniest exercise. You can do it at home but if you want to do it at some public place, do it at your own risk because you seem mad doing this. Well, no doubt that this is a very effective exercise. What you need to do is –
- Move your tongue with a hissing sound around your mouth.
- Also, move your tongue forth and back.
Doing this exercise, your vocal muscles will lose. Your muscles will also be relaxed. Repeat this exercise for at least 2 times.
Note: Do it for at least 8 to 10 seconds.
3: Give Massage To Jaw Muscles
Giving a Massage to your cheek and jaw muscles also contributes to strengthening your voice. For doing this exercise, you have to follow the given instructions.
- Keep your palm on both of your cheeks.
- Massage slowly in a circular motion.
- Give Massage to your jaws and cheeks.
This will lose your jaw muscles and strengthen your voice. This exercise benefits when doing for 30 seconds long. Do it any time of the day and can be done before going to an audition or meeting.
4: Practice Chewing
Do as if you are chewing some food or chewing gum. Make sure both of your upper and lower jaw muscles get involved in the exercise. Repetition rule is the same i.e. 8 to 10 seconds and 3 to 5 times a day. This exercise will also lose the jaw muscles and will result in a more appealing and clear voice.
5: Roll Your Neck
This is also a nice and quick exercise to keep your neck muscles active and strong. Do it as suggested below.
- Keep your shoulders intact.
- Now rotate your neck slowly in a clockwise and counter-clockwise direction.
- Repeat it for 10 times
- Now do vice versa. I mean keep your neck intact and rotate shoulders.
6: Do Some Vocal Practice
Try speaking some humming words to Strengthen your voice. Here are some words that may help you –
Say Mm-mmm, Hmmm, Ney Ney & Such Words
Trying speaking Mm-mmm till the time your face vibrates. If this happens, it means that you are doing it correctly. You can do this exercise around 5 – 7 times repeatedly. This exercise develops resonance in your voice.
7: Practice Through Tongue Twisters
Practice speaking tongue twisters as fast as you can, so that you can remove all the pronunciation error and impurities in your accent. You can start slow for checking the clarity and then you can gradually pick up the speed. We have found out some effective tongue twisters.
- Three Free Throws
- The Blue Bird Blinks
- Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, and,
- Freshly fried flying fish, freshly fried flesh
- Blue Blood but bad blood.
